On the bench

Grey is the gondola colour that disappears into a train and lets whatever is inside do the talking. Load it with coal, ballast, timber or scrap and the eye goes to the load rather than the wagon, which is exactly what you want when you have built a convincing load. The open top also makes this the easiest car to customise if you enjoy that side of the hobby.

How it behaves in a build

Construction follows the range standard: metal components for weight, painted lettering and exterior detail at one to eighty-seven, couplers fitted at both ends. Empty gondolas are famously twitchy on poor track because they are light, so the added mass here is doing real work. Run it with the red gondola and the pair look like part of a fleet rather than two purchases.
