HO locomotives: the units that pull the train (8 packs)

Powered 1:87 switchers and road units with metal or copper wheels and CNC chassis.

What sits in this drawer

An HO locomotive is judged in the first ten seconds. Does it start without a shove, does it crawl at low throttle, and does it keep going over a turnout. Everything we do to these models — machined chassis, copper wheels, weighted frames — is in service of those three questions.

The shelf runs from small 0-4-0 steam switchers at 12 V to 14 V road units like the GP20 and the Warbonnet-nosed FP7. Switchers are the right first engine: they are short, they take tight curves, and they give a small layout something to do. The long diesels want wider radius track and a run to stretch out on.

Questions about this drawer

Will these run on my existing track?

Yes, on standard HO gauge DC track, including the nickel silver rail on our track shelf.

What is the difference between 12 V and 14 V models?

The 14 V units are the larger road locomotives with a CNC chassis and copper wheels; they draw more and pull more. The 12 V switchers are lighter and happier on tight curves.

Do they come with a controller?

No. They are powered models for an existing DC controller; the track and the power supply are bought separately.

One drawer over

This is one drawer of a longer bench; the ASTEM collection covers the rest of the job. Our technic building set parts are cut to the standard module, so a technic gear, an axle or a pin out of this pack is compatible with the LEGO® system pieces you already own. Builders are blunt about what binds and what slips, and that customer experience is the only review that moves a production run.
