Gears and axles: the shelf that makes things turn (6 packs)

Toothed drive parts: spur gears, worm sets, racks, differentials and the cross axles that carry them.

What sits in this drawer

A gear is the cheapest way to change a machine's mind. Put a small gear on the motor and a large one on the output and you have torque; flip them and you have speed. Everything else on a technic build — the beams, the panels, the clever linkage you are proud of — is scaffolding around that one decision, and a gear train that is wrong by one tooth count will sulk no matter how neat the frame is.

We keep the toothed parts and the cross axles that carry them: 8, 16, 24 and 40 tooth spur gears, worm drives, racks for steering, differentials for a driven back end, and the bushes and connectors that stop a gear wandering along its axle. Each gear is moulded with a true technic profile, so teeth mesh at the standard stud spacing instead of skipping under load.

Questions about this drawer

What is a gear and axle set used for?

Building a drivetrain. You use it to step a motor's speed up or down, to drive a steering rack, or to send power round a corner with a worm and crown gear.

Do the gears fit standard technic beams?

They do. Tooth counts and axle holes follow the system dimensions, so a 24 tooth gear sits at the same centre distance you are used to.

Which gear should I start with?

A 8 and 24 pair. That three to one step is the clearest demonstration of what gearing does, and it is forgiving if your frame is slightly out of square.

One drawer over

Everything else in the collection is in the same ten drawers, a click from here. Across the technic shelves the geometry is constant — one technic gear module, one axle cross, one pin diameter — which is what makes a mixed building set LEGO® compatible in practice. Builders are blunt about what binds and what slips, and that customer experience is the only review that moves a production run.
