On the bench

The goods van is the anonymous majority of a real freight train, and a layout without several of them looks like a collection rather than a railway. This one is built to the range standard with painted lettering and exterior detail at one to eighty-seven, so it reads correctly from normal viewing distance without demanding a magnifier.

How it behaves in a build

Weight comes from metal components, which keeps it rolling steadily behind a locomotive instead of bouncing over rail joints. Couplers are fitted at both ends. We would buy two or three of these before buying a second specialist wagon; a train that is all tank cars and cabooses looks staged, whereas a string of vans with one interesting car in it looks like it is going somewhere.
