On the bench

Two units rather than one is the right way to buy these, because the first thing you discover is that a pull-back model wants a second chassis to race. The mechanism is a wound spring with a ratchet: drag backwards, release, and the model runs until the spring unwinds. Torque is good enough to pull a reasonably heavy build across a carpet, which is more than most small electric motors manage.

How it behaves in a build

We like them for younger builders and for quick experiments. There is nothing to charge, nothing to switch off and leave running, and nothing to break electrically. They also serve as a rolling test load when you are checking whether a chassis has enough stiffness before committing to a powered drivetrain. Mount them with friction pins rather than plain ones; the spring release puts a sharp shock through the frame.
