If a layout can have only one freight car, it should be a forty foot boxcar. It is the wagon that carried everything for half a century, it looks correct in almost any era from the thirties to the seventies, and it couples behind any locomotive without looking out of place. The sliding doors open, which is a small thing that makes a static model feel like equipment.

How it behaves in a build

Construction follows our usual standard: metal components for weight and steady rolling, painted lettering and exterior detail at one to eighty-seven, couplers fitted at both ends. It is also the most forgiving car for a new layout, since a boxcar needs no load, no special industry and no particular era to make sense. Start a roster here and add the interesting cars afterwards.
