On the bench

An open deck flatcar is the car you buy when you want to build the load yourself. Machinery, lumber, military vehicles, a boat, a length of structural steel, anything you can secure to a deck. It is the most customisable wagon in HO and the one that most rewards an hour with a scrap box and some thread for tie downs.

How it behaves in a build

Out of the box it is honest, well proportioned forty foot stock with painted lettering and exterior detail at one to eighty-seven. Metal components matter more here than almost anywhere, since a bare deck has very little mass of its own and a light flatcar is the classic derailment candidate. Couplers are fitted at both ends. Buy two: one to run loaded, one to run empty back.
