Twenty-eight pieces is the point where a loop becomes a layout. The set is built around turnouts, which is what separates a railway you watch from one you operate: with switching you can sort wagons, serve an industry and run a train that has a purpose. The turnouts mount simply and the stands and tie plates are detailed enough to look like junctions rather than mechanisms.

How it behaves in a build

Nickel silver is the right rail material and the reason is electrical. Steel rail oxidises into an insulator and brass oxidises into a different insulator; nickel silver oxidises into something that still conducts, so a layout left for a fortnight still runs when you come back. Through the turnout frogs this matters most, because a short wheelbase locomotive crossing a dead frog stalls.
