On the bench

This is the gear set we would hand to someone building their first reduction. Eight into twenty four is a clean three to one. Eight into forty is five to one. Chain two of those and you have fifteen to one, which is roughly the point where a small motor starts lifting things. Having all four counts in quantity means you can try a ratio, dislike it, and try another without the trip back to the parts bin.

How it behaves in a build

The feel is the part reviewers keep mentioning. A gear that fits too tight binds the train and stalls the motor; one that fits loose skips teeth under torque and chews itself. These sit between, which is the whole job. The plastic has a little flex to it and a smooth face, so a train spun by hand runs quietly rather than clattering. Colours arrive at random and the gears carry no markings beyond the moulded tooth count.

Fit and compatibility

Standard technic gear geometry throughout, so these mesh with existing gears and press onto standard cross axles without reaming.

What builders wrote about this pack

  • 4.0 ★

    Good for classroom STEM

Worked pretty well. Not Lego fit and quality but not too far off.

    Good variety

My son has a vex kit but wanted to switch to more creative building rather than just instructional building. This allowed for him to do that.

More from the Gears and Axles drawer

More ASTEM technic parts: gears, axles and compatible building block sets

Builders rarely stop at one drawer, and the ASTEM collection is laid out with that in mind. We measure before we pack: technic gear teeth, axle cross and pin fit, so the building set you open is compatible with the LEGO® parts on your table. We read every customer message, and the experience builders describe is what we change the tooling for.
