A reefer is a boxcar with a job, and it usually shows: lighter paint to reflect heat, hatches at the roof corners, and the bold lettering of the produce companies that owned the fleets. It is one of the more decorative freight cars and one car most layouts should own, because almost every destination on a railway eats.

How it behaves in a build

Copper wheels are the notable specification here. On a car rather than a locomotive they matter for rolling rather than pickup — copper runs smoothly in the bearings and keeps a free rolling car free rolling, which shows up as a train that coasts properly rather than dragging. Metal construction adds weight, painted lettering carries the detail, and couplers are fitted at both ends.
