On the bench

R4 is where long cars start to look right. At four hundred and eighty-one point two millimetres the overhang on a passenger coach or a long container flat drops to something the eye forgives, and a train rounding the curve reads as a train rather than a string of cars arguing with the track. Twelve sections make a circle, and it nests outside R3 for a triple track formation.

How it behaves in a build

It costs space, which is the only reason not to use it everywhere. The rail is rust free for consistent current, and the sleepers carry the same realistic detail as the rest of the system so curves of different radii sit together without a visible change in texture. Use R4 at the front of a layout where trains are on display and tighter radii at the back.
