On the bench

The Mogul is the locomotive that built the American branch line: six driven wheels for adhesion, a two wheel pony truck to guide it into curves, and no trailing truck to lengthen the frame. That layout is forgiving of modest radii, which makes it one of the better steam choices for a layout that does not have a basement to spread into. The ATSF 605 marking gives it a specific identity rather than generic lettering.

How it behaves in a build

Weight comes from metal construction and it is distributed over the drivers where it does the most good, so the model pulls a respectable train rather than spinning at the first grade. Exterior detail and painted lettering follow the range standard, and couplers are fitted for adding cars. Run it with a short freight consist and it looks exactly like what it is modelled on.

Fit and compatibility

HO scale 1:87, standard gauge, with couplers matched to the rolling stock in this range.

More ASTEM technic parts: gears, axles and compatible building block sets

This is one drawer of a longer bench; the ASTEM collection covers the rest of the job. Across the technic shelves the geometry is constant — one technic gear module, one axle cross, one pin diameter — which is what makes a mixed building set LEGO® compatible in practice. Most of what we fix comes from builders writing in; a customer note about the experience of opening a bag beats any lab test.
