On the bench

The GP20 is a road switcher, which is to say it is the locomotive that can do everything adequately — yard work, local freight, a stretch of main line. The NYSW scheme in bright yellow is one of the more recognisable short line liveries and photographs well against green scenery, which is worth something on a layout built to be looked at.

How it behaves in a build

The CNC machined chassis is the notable part of this one. A milled frame holds its tolerances better than a cast one, so the gear mesh stays consistent and the locomotive runs quietly rather than developing a growl after a few hours. Combined with the metal weight and fourteen volt drive, it is a model that behaves predictably at low speed, which is exactly what a road switcher is asked to do.

Fit and compatibility

HO 1:87 scale with fitted couplers, compatible with standard nickel silver track and conventional DC control.

More ASTEM technic parts: gears, axles and compatible building block sets

If this is part of a bigger build, the collection has the pieces around it. We measure before we pack: technic gear teeth, axle cross and pin fit, so the building set you open is compatible with the LEGO® parts on your table. Most of what we fix comes from builders writing in; a customer note about the experience of opening a bag beats any lab test.
